Aug 1 (attendance, published Aug 5) Fringe Review 'Death By Chocolate' by H Williams

"A well-executed and unusual fringe experience"
"Interactive here is almost an understatement."
"A cast of 10 actors ... were frankly faultless."
"The whole experience was slickly orchestrated"

[To clarify a few points made in this review -- the chocolate is part of the plot, as the murder took place
at a chocolate themed singles event. In previous productions, we have performed at a chocolatiers who
were "bribing" the detectives to keep quiet about the case. In this case, forensics have confiscated
everything as evidence to be handled by detectives as appropriate. Regarding the answer, please see note
under The Scotsman's review, below. And, in case anyone was wondering, there are no moments which
        are staged.]

Aug 1 (attendance, published Aug 5) Broadway Baby 'Unconventional interactive mystery - with chocolate' by Kathryn Mack
        "Exciting"
        "The concept is excellent."

[To clarify one point made in this review -- the setting is not at the singles night - that is where the crime was committed.
The setting is a holding room, after the murder has taken place. Thanks to Kathryn for pointing out that this was unclear -
we are now including this point in future performances]

Aug 3 (attendance, published Aug 6) The Scotsman 'Theatre/Comedy Reviews' by Lee Randall (also appears here)
"Audience pleaser... I can attest that the crowd thoroughly enjoyed themselves"
"The game young cast work hard, keeping in character no matter what"
"It's a rather seamy tale. I won't spoil it with details, since the fun's in the detection."

[To clarify a point made in this review -- you will not have to wait until the end of the season to find out anything. The plot
continues to unfold online throughout the season -- a show after the show.]

Aug 3 (attendance, published Aug 7) Metro 'Death By Chocolate' by Andrzej Lukowski (page 35)
"The suspects' performances are highly entertaining"
        "A thoroughly diverting hour"

[To clarify a few points made in this review -- the usual length of an IMMI is 2-3 hours, however, for the Edinburgh Fringe
we were advised that a sample length version was most appropriate. We are in agreement that audiences should have
more time to solve it. They are welcome to attend again and pick up where they left off -- any additional tickets are
released at box office at 2pm the day of performance.]

Death By Chocolate is a performance-based, fully interactive experience. The audience are equipped with notepads and pens, mugshots of the suspects, and a briefing on the details of the crime. Within minutes of arriving, they are transformed into autonomous detectives who can move anywhere in the space and ask anything of the suspects. Imagine a cocktail style party, only instead of friends and tipple, there are suspects and chocolate.

This crime is set in the aftermath of a murder at a chocolate-themed singles night. Eleven supposed strangers: the immaculate hostess, the recently wheelchair-bound horse rider and her nervous carer, the chauvinist, the quiet one...  behind the façades, detectives may uncover secrets ranging from criminal pasts to current controversies. But who could had motive and method to kill Mr AJ Oak?

"A successful and enjoyable night... Each character impressively sustained their disposition throughout relentless interrogation from many a novice sleuth... There is honestly no better way to solve a crime than with a complimentary mousse or hot chocolate in hand."
Rosanna Stevens, Buzzcuts, Oct 6, 2007

"Involving... easy to get caught up in the whole drama... 3.5 stars"
Tim Hunter, The Age, Oct 12, 2007

"Intrigue filled... Vanessa B Baylen's 'Death By Chocolate' is a winner."
Dennis Coleman, Adelaide Now, Feb 24, 2008

"Do this if you're seeking something different from the usual slack-jawed onlookers."
Jenny Smith, Rip It Up, Mar 1, 2008

"Delicious... Everyone has a hidden motive and each of the suspects seems to have something to hide. Creator, director and producer Vanessa B Baylen has devised a clever show that is entertaining, thanks especially to the 10 wonderful performers, while the camaraderie with the other detectives makes for a fun experience... 3.5 stars"
Antimo Iannella, The Advertiser, Mar 3, 2008

"Absolutely fantastic night!" "A real mystery!" "Sooo much fun" "Truly professional" "Bloody awesome, thanks for a great night. Acting was brilliant, story was intriguing and I love chocolate!" "That was so good, so creative, so entertaining! Appreciate it. Love talented actors and writers. Awesome!!!" "Must do it again""One of the most fun, interactive, innovative and unique shows I have ever been to at the Fringe" "Heaps of fun. Thanks a lot."
